About Me

Patricia Schuppert
Certified Birth and Postpartum Doula
Hello,
my name is Patricia and I am a Madriella certified Birth and Postpartum doula. I got certified in 2022 and am excited to share in this journey with you.

I have two children of my own, both of whom were born at home with 5 incredible midwives between the two births.

I came to the birth work world after the birth of my second child. The care and compassion I received at each of my births made all the difference and I would like to help you feel as loved, supported and empowered as I did. After the birth of my son I attended an amazing mom's groups led by a Birth Doula and her stories about the world of pregnancy and birth fascinated and intrigued me.

After many conversations with her and finding her work incredibly rewarding and interesting I decided to pursue my certificate to begin my own doula business.
Why the name?
When it came time for a name for my business I tried out a few different names and ideas but nothing captured what I wanted the name to say about me and the type of doula I want to be until one day we were reading the book "Does a Kangaroo have a Mother, too?" and I went "of course, that's it!! Kangaroo Care!! This name so perfectly symbolizes the care and love I want to share with my clients and their babies and how I am raising my two babies.

Kangaroo care is the idea of keeping babies close, skin-to-skin as a means of strengthening the baby-parent bond. My goal as a doula is to make you feel as taken care of as a baby experiencing Kangaroo care.

Kangaroos are symbols of courage, energy, stamina, strength, transition and adaptability - a great description of traits every birthing person needs as they go through pregnancy and birth.

My Philosophy
I believe that birth happens best when the birthing person feels safe, secure, and supported. I aim to bring a sense of safety, security and continuity to all births. We use our prenatal appointments to get to know each other and to build a relationship based on trust. By getting to know you, your partner and your support system, and empowering you with evidence based information, the goal is for you to feel confident and secure as you approach the birth of your child. I enjoy getting to know each client and seek to provide personalized ways to support your body, mind and spirit. During birth I see myself as your (and your partner’s and family’s) guide; providing continuous support and encouragement
The idea of a Doula is both old and new; the ancient Greek word “Doula” translates to “a woman who serves”. Doulas have been helping other birthing people during childbirth since the beginning of time, however, doulas started re-gaining popularity in the 1960s when birth was reclaimed as a natural process vs a medical procedure. Today the word refers to a person trained to provide emotional, physical and informational support to birthing people throughout their pregnancy, birth and the early postpartum period. I am hired by YOU and can assist you during a hospital, home or birth center birth .
My work is based on the 5 facets of the
Madriella Doula Certification process

1. Emotional Support
while I hope you have a smooth and joyful pregnancy, labor and postpartum experience, for some birthing people this time can be stressful and anxiety producing. During this time I will be there to listen to you and offer emotional support on how to make your pre- and postnatal time as fulfilling as possible.

2. Physical support
Includes various positioning and massage techniques that can help ease labor pains. I can also teach your birth partner(s) to ease labor pains through walking, sitting, leaning and squatting

3. Informational Support
As an experienced doula my goal is to educate you so you can make the best decision based on the best available information. My purpose is not to convince you of anything or advise you against what your Doctor or Midwife recommend. Through conversations and by getting to know you, the goal is to empower you to be an active part of your pregnancy.

4. Partner Reinforcement
Whether it's your partner, mom, best friend or anyone else, I can help reassure those helping you during the entirety of your pregnancy, birth and postpartum period. I can share with them comfort techniques, advocacy strategies, as well as share with you and them local resources that may be helpful. Having a doula present also allows your birth partner(s) to take a break and rest, knowing you are in good hands.

5. Self-Advocacy
this is by far the most important and fulfilling part of my job; to empower you to be an active partner in this journey. This includes creating a birth plan, a postpartum plan, and helping you convey your wishes to your birth team throughout your pregnancy and Labor.
